T5W: Teachers and Mentors in Literature

I was thinking about my blogging schedule over the coming weeks, looking at the things I like to post at this time of year, and was checking Goodreads to see what books I’ve read this month when I remembered that I hadn’t actually checked this week’s Top 5 Wednesday post. I have learnt a lot from books, I’ve been reading for, well, as long as I can remember, I don’t remember a life before books and words, so a lot of my knowledge has come from the world of literature, so I was really excited about this week’s topic.

The 140 Character Review: Welcome Back!

Guys, I read a lot books. I watch a lot of TV and film. I take into account other people’s opinions when I choose what to read and write, but I am quite bad at reviewing things myself. OK, I know not everyone is going to care what I think or what I say, but it’s nice to be able to give a little bit back to the bookish and TV/Film world, to review what I read/watch, and to keep a record of what it made me think at the time. This year, I’ve also set some pretty big goals and resolutions, namely reviewing everything I read, so I thought that a helping hand was needed.

So, with this in mind, I have decided to bring back my old blogging meme The 140 Character Review. Quite simply, it is a review that could be composed and completed within the length of a tweet (well, before they upped the character limit!) The time taken to review something in such a short format is a lot less than writing a full review, but it still captures my thoughts and feelings. I also find that writing with such a low count makes you think concisely and clearly about the media you have consumed.  Continue reading “The 140 Character Review: Welcome Back!”

T5W: Paranormal

As we get closer and closer to Halloween, I am seeing more and more spooky recommendations and creepy book themes. So many books are based on scary creatures, and unsettling happenings, that these books and posts are just made for this time of year. I was having a good think about the post for this week, and couldn’t think of many/any paranormal books that I have read and enjoyed. And then I thought about it and realised that I was being super ridiculous (what a surprise!)

T5W: Books that took forever to read

118368This week’s Top 5 Wednesday takes place on the second day of my week off from work. I highlight that because I have no plans for this week off, and I have just realised it as I write this. Yes, Emma and I have grand plans for this weekend that involve flat pack furniture and Strictly (I know, I know, you’re all jealous), but we would have had that off together anyway this week, so I have started to wonder why I took this week off work at all. I shouldn’t really complain, a week off work is always nice, but I kind of feel like I am wasting it! Anyway, less of the moaning and more of the reading…

Bout of Books 16: Day 4

Bout of Books 16The weather is taking the absolute mick today and I am severely unimpressed. Of course it has been great weather while I have been in, and now as it is been rainy while I’m off, until I’m back in work when the sun has come out. Absolute joke, the weather and I are no longer friends.

A little bit of a digression there, sorry! Continue reading “Bout of Books 16: Day 4”

Bout of Books 12 – Day 3

I am really enjoying this Bout of Books. I was worried that I’d give up because I’m away from home, and therefore real books, and because no one I know is doing it too, but no, I’m into it.

There is a real community feel with the Bout of Books read-a-thon that I’ve never really experienced outside of Tumblr in the blogging world and I really like it. Thanks guys!

The 140 character film review – The good and the bad

In our free time at school, we tend to fill our time reading, writing our journals, and attempting to stay awake in new and inventive ways. TV shows take up more of our watching time after school and at the weekends, but we are gearing up for a Christmas movie watching week starting tomorrow, so I thought I would make sure I reviewed the films we have seen in the past couple of weeks. The 140 character book review – This is a tad embarrassing

I would love to say that the books that I am reading have improved in quality. Don’t get me wrong, two have, and I am really pleased I have finally got round to reading the Millennium trilogy, but some are downright embarrassing, and I 100% blame Jade. If she had not told me about them, put them on my nook, made me read them, and then watch the appalling film, then I would have stopped after book 1.
