Book Haul #7

It has been almost 2 months since I last posted a book haul, and for me, that is a seriously good amount of time. Book Haul #6 followed Book Haul #5 after just over a week, a stupidly short time even for me, so, I decided to try and make a concerted effort to buy less books. And d’you know what, in the large part I really think that I have succeeded, because there are not that many on here, for me, for a 2 month period, and many of them were bought in the last 10 days in a spending flurry. Well, I’m not eating unhealthily, and I can’t have chocolate, so I need a vice, OK?

I also had to use a different back drop this month because I quickly realised that the shortening days and my work schedule didn’t allow me to use my normal trusted spot. So, I decided to jazz up the background with my favourite picture: a black and white shot of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco where the bridge only has been left in it’s distinctive orange/red hue. I love that picture.

Strictly Come Dancing: Week 7

After last week’s spooky Halloween Spectacular, things in the ballroom are returning to normal as we enter November. The numbers are starting to dwindle, each week the competition grows and the less talented celebrities are exiting the dance floor. November is always the time where the 10’s start showing and everyone ups their game, so things should her exciting from now on.

Last week we said goodbye to the awesome chef Simon and his partner Karen, and let me tell you, Shirley is not the only person who is gutted. I loved Simon. He gave it a good go with no shame, he danced to You’ll Never Walk Alone, and he was entertaining throughout. I voted for him repeatedly and I am gutted he won’t be there anymore. But we can’t dwell on his departure and must carry on!

Serious serious props to the wardrobe ladies this week, and for the whole series actually, because Tess and Claudia are absolutely killing it once again. I think I love Claudia’s dress too much this week because it is just everything. Continue reading

Fat Friday: Week 5

It’s November. Winter is well and truly coming. The weather has suddenly turned and it’s no freezing all the time, and the clocks went back last weekend which means it is now super dark super early. I don’t want to become an old person and talk about the short days, but the lack of light at night sucks.

I’m avoiding the main issue here. Guys, I’ve had a bad week. A really terrible, bad, horrendous week. I have fallen off the wagon and I am struggling to get back on. I am disappointed and angry at myself, and most importantly, I am gutted that this major setback in mindset is probably going to have a detrimental effect on my progress. Grrrrr.

30 before 30

It’s November. Halloween has been and gone, the shops are plastered from wall to wall, floor to ceiling with all things Christmas, and this month, it’s my birthday. If I’m honest, I didn’t accept my 21st birthday very well, or my 22nd, and certainly not my 25th. This year, I am once again face with a slight feeling of getting older with nothing to show for it, so, this year, I am going to try and make it my mission to change that. So, I decided to make a motivational list of things that I want to do between now and my next milestone birthday. Here’s my 30 before 30 list:

October: It’s a Wrap

Howdy folks! It’s awfully chilly these days, isn’t it. Must be all the spookiness around, eh? I have been reading and listening to an eclectic mix of stories, once again. I’ve actually read some of my favourite books of the year so far this month, in fact, they’re some of my favourite books EVER! Without further ado….

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood Trevor Noah | 28 Sep 17 – 04 Oct 17 | Audiobook | 5 Stars

I am not sure that I can quite string together the correct words to describe how incredibly brilliant this book it. At the time of reviewing, I’ve read over 100 books this year, and can say that this is by far my favourite read.

To start with, the stories and tales that Trevor Noah is telling somehow feel so much more real as I have fairly recently visited Johannesburg, where the majority of the book is set. Secondly, Trevor Noah has a brilliant way of telling a story. I’d expect this, considering he is a comedian, but the book is so well done that it doesn’t actually feel like a book at all.7

For me though, the magic was in the audiobook. There is something special about hearing the writer narrate their own work, especially when it’s autobiographical. At no point did it feel like he was reading a book, he was just telling me about stories from his life. He is a comedian, so of course he is funny and has great comedic timing, but there was something harrowing about the hilarity of the some of the events he was talking about.

A very impressive, funny, and eye-opening must-read!

Spooktacular Strictly Come Dancing: Week 6

Helloooooo, and welcome to a spooky, scary, spectacular of a Halloween special. As things hot up at Hellstree, the costumes come out, the wacky make-up is at it’s best, and fun personalities dance across the ballroom in the most entertaining night of the series. Week 6 is always the turning points, where the worst guys start to to linger at the bottom, the guys in the middle take off, and the guys at the top really get into their stride. There is an extra pro dance, there is a lots of awesome outfits, and we get to see Count Dave Arch in all his finery.

Bruno is back (which I’m not actually sure I am happy about) as Beetlejuice, Craig has dressed as the Joker, Darcey channelling Red Riding Hood, and Shirley absolutely killing it as Cruella De Vil. There are spiders and ghouls, witches and the Mother of Dragons, what more could you want?

Last week we (finally) saw the end of Brian and Amy, and I really can’t say I am at all disappointed. I was waiting for him to go since week 1, and was ready for him to bite the bullet. Joe also got his first 10 of the series, rising back to the (near) top of the leaderboard, which was a welcome sight!

To start the show, the ghostly pros performed a pretty awesome dance. The theming was so creepy and ghastly and looked so incredible. Neil was also the middle of the dance rocking his costume to perfection. I literally love him. Claudia looks pretty in her flapper style dress, it must be hard for her to get into the Halloween mood after everything with her daughter a couple of years ago, and Tess looks fierce in her deep red velvet  SYMMETRICAL dress. Now, let’s get on with show…

Fat Friday: Week 4

Hellooooooooo. Was that spooky? It was meant to be spooky. Because, y’know, it’s almost Hallowe’en. Annnnnnnyway, good evening and welcome to another edition of Fat Friday. I have a long weekend off this weekend, which means I have had a Friday off that will lead into a Saturday off and a Sunday off. I realise that it is obvious what a long weekend means, but I so rarely get them that I am making a point of emphasising all of the days off in a little row. It’s the little things in life y’know!
