Strictly Saturdays | Week Four

So its week 4…already! Where does time go huh? Last week we were in the Movies, before we know it we’ll be celebrating Hallowe’en week! Week 4 has seen some historic jives and belting dances over the last few years and has been the week where some of the celebs let go and give it some beans, I hope this week is not different! This post might be a little lacking as I am not feeling my best, but I’ll get something down anyway!

Strictly Saturdays is a weekly review of Strictly Come Dancing. Expect biased reviews, uneducated dancing critique, and sass.

Movie week was spectacular. There was falls, costumes, our first 10 of the series, and some truly memorable dances (not always for the right reasons). It was a pretty great movie week, but unfortunately everyone didn’t survive to tell the tale. Anneka and Kevin danced off against David and Nadiya and became the second pair to leave. It’s the earliest Kev has left the show, and to be honest, it was probably the right time as she was particularly poor last week. We’re back to normal this week, not themes in sight just good old dancing.

I am sorry Tess, but that dress is absolutely awful and I am sorry for my eyes that they are going to have to see it so many times this evening. On the other hand, Claudia you are SLAYING it, that dress is awesome. And as ever, Motsi is fierce and stunning and IS THAT A CAPE Shirley? Niiiice. The boys are suited and booted nicely as always and man they look good.

Let’s dance…

Chris Ramsay and Karen Hauer | Jive to ‘Saturday Night’s Alright (for Fighting)’ (watch here)

I love these, they are right up there as a favourite couple. I love watching him and his wife on instagram and just find them absolutely hilarious (I mean his is a comedian but he is funny)

Oh I really enjoyed that. That was so fun and he didn’t stop, and except for the mistake in the middle, it was really fun. He kept going and he was so much better in terms of timing, and he even popped a cheeky basketball moment in. And there was a false ending?

Liz: 6 | 9 Emma: 6 | 9

Emma Barton and Anton du Beke | Viennese Waltz to ‘Send In The Clowns’ (watch here)

What? An actress can act? No way! I feel mean but I would expect them to be able to create a story and act a piece while dancing y’know? I like these when they’re being silly, not so sure when it’s serious.

Did I see a cheeky fleckerl there? Oo and pivots! D’you know what? When they were dancing it was full of emotion and grace, but I didn’t feel there was actually that much dancing? I wanted a bit more to be honest.

Craig: 8 Motsi: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 35

Liz: 7 | 5 Emma: 7 | 5

Dev Griffin and Dianne Buswell | Cha Cha to ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ (watch here)

I still watch their dance from last week, I really love these because they’re just so funny and full of energy. He seems to really be growing in confidence and getting into things and even though he is finding this week difficult, I think they’re going to be good again. And no dropping Dianne this week, so that’s better than last week’s prep.

I feel that was intensely forgettable. Like I think there was a lack of personality and intensity and it just wasn’t a good dance for him. I didn’t really like the song which is never good thing when watching a dance.

Craig: 6 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 27

Liz: 6 | 4 Emma: 5 | 4

Catherine Tyldesley and Johannes Radebe | Charleston to ‘Single Ladies’ (watch here)

Forget Catherine, Johannes is going to be fiiiiire in this dance. It’s going to epic and camp and hilarious and I will love him so much more which. Oh I hope there is good lifts. Oh I am so excited, this could be memorable.

I was not ready for him even though I was so ready for him. His smile and his enjoyment was off the charts! I mean it was all there, she was doing it but I didn’t think it was big enough in what was a huge song. I feel like she absolutely loved it though.

Craig: 6 Motsi: 8 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 8 Total: 30

Liz: 7 | 8 Emma: 7 | 8

Alex Scott and Neil Jones | Tango to ‘Go Your Own Way’ (watch here)

I bloody love these, and they are getting better week on week. I really love the tango and I feel like she could really get into this character. I bloody love Neil. I hope she feels more comfortable in this.

TUUUUUNE. I really enjoyed that and I definitely think that was her best dance. There was some amazing moments, and it had a bit of the fierceness, and there was quite a lot of sharpness, but I felt like she looked like she was more in this one.

Craig: 4 Motsi: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 7 Total: 23

Liz: 6 | 7 Emma: 6 | 7

David James and Nadiya Bychkova | Quickstep to ‘From Now On’ (watch here)

They were in the dance off last week, and even though they were a little better, I can’t help but think that this is going to be bad. If he couldn’t dance at a slower pace, how is he going to cope now.

Well actually he look like he has really enjoyed himself and he looks like he made a bit of an improvement there. There were sections of that which we quite good and actually I quite enjoyed it. It was quite skippy, but it was so much better.

Craig: 6 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 8 Total: 28

Liz: 5 | 7 Emma: 7 | 7

Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse | Rumba to ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ (watch here)

I am living for Shirley’s reaction to Kelvin’s hips. I have watched their dance from last week so many times, loved it. It’s a shame this is a rumba though because I really don’t like it at all. Oti does look special though, like wow. I love Kelvin’s flirty nod to Shirley.

Oti is just so stunning and her reaction at the end like yes please. That was uncomfy to watch and was all the things I don’t love about the rumba and it was definitely like filth. That must mean it was good right?! This is possibly the best set of judges comments I have ever seen.

Craig: 9 Motsi: 9 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 36

Liz: 9 | 6 Emma: 9 | 5

Emma Weymouth and Aljaz Skorjanec | Jive to ‘Kids in America’ (watch here)

Lats week was so cute and made me really connect with them, I am not keeping my eye out for them. And hello Aljaz this week huh! I actually quite like this song and think this could be good. Ohhhhhh them baking, Aljaz baking is too adorable it’s like a little kid.

I really like her and thought that was quite light and airy, but it takes her quite a while to get going. Those drops were amazing and I thought it was good. Not sure there was enough attack and retraction, but it was good.

Craig: 7 Motsi: 7 Shirley: 7 Bruno: 7 Total: 28

Liz: 7 | 7 Emma: 7 | 6

Michelle Visage and Giovanni Pernice | Salsa to ‘Quimbara’ (watch here)

These two are just too funny and so perfect together and I just think they’re brilliant too watch, I think this could be really good, she will give it sass and fire and they go well together.

I enjoyed it, it showed her sassy side and his shimmies were funny but I don’t think it was her best dance. She lost a bit of her normal energy before the end which was a shame, but it was still good.

Craig: 7 Motsi: 8 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 8 Total: 31

Liz: 7 | 6 Emma: 6 | 7

Will Bayley and Janette Manrara | Foxtrot to ‘Señorita’ (watch here)

A flamenco foxtrot huh? That sounds interesting. He is really amusing and I actually really like him, and I hope that this more graceful dance will not stump him. I love his attitude, and how he is so matter of fact he is about his difficulties with this dance. I really hope this is good,

He tried so hard and I really actually quite liked that. There was a definite story, his frame seemed to be quite good, and I actually really liked it. Oh I just want to give him a hug. Oh Motsi…

Craig: 6 Motsi: 6 Shirley: 6 Bruno: 6 Total: 24

Liz: 6 | 7 Emma: 7 | 7

Mike Bushell and Katya Jones | Quickstep to ‘Come On Eileen’ (watch here)

Last week was too funny and he just absolutely loves it so much. Katya has some weird teaching methods but I think she is possibly one of the best teachers on the show. The smile on his face even in training.

Tuuuune alert again! Oh that was really good, I absolutely loved that and it was so much better than I thought it would be. It was light, it was quick, there was fun, there was a good frame, so good. He looks so proud of himself. Awww Katya has lost it.

Craig: 7 Motsi: 9 Shirley: 8 Bruno: 8 Total: 32

Liz: 7 | 9 Emma: 7 | 9

Saffron Barker and A J Pritchard | Couple’s Choice Contemporary to ‘Because You Loved Me’ (watch here)

Urgh, I just don’t like a contemporary. I really don’t like these that much for no reason what so ever. I am sure she has worked hard and done a lot in her world but I just don’t like her or think much of her. Oh Saffron’s Nan, and I love that AJ just has his feet up.

No bloody shoes, sigh. I really would prefer it if they wore shoes. That was really quite good and there was a lot of control and lovely moments, and the moment with her Nan at the end. She is really coming on well.

Craig: 7 Motsi: 8 Shirley: 9 Bruno: 9 Total: 33

Liz: 8 | 6 Emma: 9 | 7

Karim Zeroual and Amy Dowden | Tango to ‘Paradise’ (watch here)

These two are so childish in this best way. Karim’s little Welsh accent tho… I think this could be one hell of a show stopper. I am not always about tangoes to modern songs on Strictly, but if he can be serious, it could be amazing. Awww his little family!!

He looks as though he is channeling Riz Ahmed, like it’s scary! It was so good. It was so sharp, and tense, and serious, and it was so full of content. That was definitely my favourite dance of the night.

Judges Favourite | Liz’s Favourite | Emma’s Favourite

Karim and Amy’s Tango

Well well well, everyone has moved on a little haven’t they. There were no dreadful performances really and there were some really impressive improvements (yes David I am looking at you!). I am not 100% sure that the scoring this year is consistent and to a point it is doing my head in, but overall it was pretty great. Karim and Amy were undoubtedly the best bit of the show, what a dance – and more 10’s!!!

I have to say that as much as I will always make sure I see these pro dances, they are a bit more hit and miss than they used to be because I did not love that overly lit and stylised number. I kinda preferred it when they did more recognisable and classic routines. Is that weird? I don’t know if that is weird, but there we go. If you want to watch it, click here. I also wasn’t feeling the performance this week by Keith Urban. He isn’t my kinda musician, but it was pretty good if you’re into him. You can watch it here.

I, wow, I think we are all shocked about the dance off. I don’t think I expected Dev and Dianne or Emma and Aljaz to be in the bottom two, so I was a bit gobsmacked – like pretty much everyone I think. The thing with Dev’s dance is that it wasn’t great choreography for him to a dance that wasn’t his dance and that really showed in the end. I was so sad to see them go, their final dance was heartbreaking just watching Dianne genuinely sob her little heart out. A huge loss, but it just highlighted how important it is to vote for the ones you like! Until next week…

…keep dancing!
