Easter Readathon | Sign Up, Goals, and TBR

Good evening guys! Easter is round the corner, and by round the corner I do mean this weekend. We all like a good excuse for a long weekend, and Easter boasts not just one but two bank holiday days. Sadly, I don’t work in a job that means I get a super long weekend, but for those of you who do, I hope you’re enjoying the thought of four work free days. It’s absolutely perfect time to get reading, so what better time for the year’s next readathon. Yes, I’m in work on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, but I am planning on getting some serious reading done, hopefully completing some of the books that have stood on my currently reading and TBR shelves for a while.

So, who do we have to thank for this holiday readathon? That would be Kate! This lovely lady, who can be found at Reading Through Infinity, was already planning on reading and decided to open up her reading plans to the wider reading community to encourage us and start some conversations about books. What’s the deal, I hear cry? Well, I first saw this readathon thanks to a friend and twitter:

Kate posted all about it on her Twitter @KateLovesColour, and is going to be hosting sprints and conversations through #EasterWeekend, on both Twitter and Instagram. It’s super laidback, aiming to just get us reading rather than aiming too high! Taken from Kate’s Sign Up Post, the guidelines:

• The readathon will start at midnight in your timezone on 30th March (when the clock hits 12am and 29th becomes 30th), and will run until midnight on Monday 2nd April. You can take part for as little or as much of it as you like. If you’re busy seeing family and can only do one day, that’s absolutely fine. If you want to do all three days, that’s absolutely fine too. It’s entirely up to you.
• You can choose to read any books you want! There’s no set theme, but my personal aim is going to be picking up books that I’ve been desperate to get to for a while. You’re all welcome to join me if you want.
• All you have to do is make a TBR and attempt to stick to it. If you deviate, don’t worry, as long as you’re reading something that’s all that matters. If you have a blog, Twitter, or Instagram account, post your TBR on there, and for Twitter I’ll be using the hashtag #EasterReadathon to tweet updates.
• I’ll be doing reading sprints on Twitter throughout the weekend, so come follow me over at @Katelovescolour to get involved in them.
• This readathon is taking place over Easter weekend, but it’s in no way meant to exclude anyone who doesn’t celebrate the holiday. Everyone is welcome to join in, and I simply chose this weekend, because it’s two days longer than usual.

The hardest bit with any readathon is always setting your own personal goals, and creating a TBR. I’ve decided to do both on my sign up post, both to help encourage me to finish what I’m reading and to start reading some books that I’ve been eyeing up for a while.

Goals

Right, what do I want to get out of the this weekend reading wise? Well, to start I am in work for a lot of it. I’m on mostly early shifts, but it means that I can’t simply devote my whole weekend to reading (what a genuine shame). Anything I do set myself needs to be reasonable, and needs to compliment my working schedule rather than tiring me out.

• Finish all books on my currently reading shelf going into the readathon (I am reading 3 books currently and some have been on my currently reading shelf for a while): If I can finish Frenchman’s Creek, The Tsar of Love and Techno, and The Dark Tourist I will be entering April with a clean reading slate, and it will mean I have hit 30 books read by the end of the third month.
• Regularly post updates and pictures on twitter and Instagram: I love hearing people progress in a readathon, seeing what others have decided to read, and looking at pretty bookstagram pictures, so I want to keep my feeds and my story fall of Easter reading goodness.
• Start 2 new books: I have so many books on my shelves that I have recently acquired and that have been on my TBR for a while, so I want to start/finish 2 books from my physical TBR that I have never read before.
• Enjoy reading: I just want to sit back and enjoy reading, enjoy the stories, and get involved.

TBR

• The Dark Tourist Dom Joly – I have almost finished this audiobook, as in, I’m a good 85% through the narration and loving this humorous take on travel
• Frenchman’s Creek Daphne Du Maurier – I am about two thirds through this, with a concerted effort I should get it finished early this weekend. I’ve been reading it for what feels like forever, I’ll be glad to be able to say I’ve finished it
• The Tsar of Love and Techno Anthony Marra – I only started this collection of short stories last weekend, and thus far have only completed the first one. I am not sure whether I will finish it, but I’d like to get further through it if I can because the first story was pretty amazing.

• Always With Love Giovanna Fletcher – I read this first book in this duology recently and loved it, this contemporary novel will provide the perfect lighter tone to accompany my other reads.
• The Horse and His Boy C S Lewis – I haven’t read any of The Chronicles of Narnia in quite a while, and I would like to try and finish the series by the end of the year. It’s also pretty short, a nice thing to have in a readathon read.
• Children of Blood and Bone Tomi Adeyemi – I think almost everyone I have seen on bookstagram and twitter recently seems to have a copy of this book, and I’d like to read it before it’s accidentally spoilt. The reviews seem to be incredibly positive, I’m hopeful it’s going to live up to the hype. (P.S. Can we just take a moment to appreciate just how stunning this edition is? K thx)

• The Bloody Chamber Angela Carter – I purchased this audiobook solely because it’s narrated by Richard Armitage and Emilia Fox, and as I will likely finish The Dark Tourist over the weekend, I will need a new audiobook to listen to while I commute to and from work.

So that’s it. The lists of goals and books to read look a lot longer than they probably are practically, but I have the time. My work schedule consists of early starts, so I have the commutes to appreciate some audiobooks and the afternoons and evenings to actually read some physical novels. I am really looking forward to this readathon. I haven’t taken part in one for a while and I kinda miss the collective reading spirit!
