This week, after a world of wind and snow and busy work days, it’s nice to think about all things freebie and all things magical. There are no topic ideas or restraints on this week’s prompt, other than to go crazy with your own thoughts and ideas. I decided to have a look back through the Top 5 Wednesday Archives for topics that I liked but never got the chance to do. There are lots as it turns out, so I think over the coming months I may do this more often if that week’s topic doesn’t suit me!

Way back in May 2014 (almost 4 yrs ago!!!) there was a little topic called ‘Top 5 Magical Items’. I’ve really started to love the world of fantasy writing, and have opened my eyes to the magical worlds (not just the wizarding world of Harry Potter), so this just seemed to have come at the perfect time. Let’s look at some magical items:
MARAUDERS MAP | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
There are so many weird and wonderful magical items in the wizarding world that I could have chosen as part of this post, but I wanted to choose the one that I thought was the most amazing when I first read the books. That, without a doubt, was the Marauder’s Map. I was mesmerised by the idea, and even though it would be useful only in Hogwarts itself, it would be a pretty cool thing to own. I say this, I do own it, but I mean own the ACTUAL one.
MJÖLNIR | Norse Mythology and Thor Comics
I completely admit that this appeals to the geeky comic book superhero watching side of me, and less about the fact it features in Norse Mythology, but who wouldn’t want to own Mjölnir, and more so, who wouldn’t want to be worthy in other to wield it. Could you imagine whipping it out at a party. It would be one hell of a conversational piece!
GANDALF’S FIREWORKS | The Lord of the Rings
I love fireworks. I think they are incredible and magical and wonderful, and I love going to see a good display. This is the main reason that these fireworks are on here, because fireworks are always so good, that if a wizard managed to make them better they would be the most magical thing of all.
ALETHIOMETER | His Dark Materials
I like maps and compasses at the best of times, so the thought of owning a compass that would help find the true answers to questions would be special. I don’t have a huge memory of these books as a whole, but the alethiometer is something that has always stuck with me and seemed mystical to me.
JACK SPARROW’S COMPASS | Pirates of the Caribbean
OK, I know, this isn’t from literature, but it is something I would simply kill to own. That sounds dramatic, but seriously, this is my favourite film of all time, and I just think that this is one of the best magical items in all of film and literature. I kind of its with the alethiometer too, the ability to seek the truth AND your heart’s greatest desire.
That was a magical post right? What are your favourite magical items?
Haha I’m with you on maps and compasses. There something so – magically adventurous about them. Same with mechanical pocket watches – for me anyway.
I have to be honest though. I think I’d add a lightsaber to the list haha

I love maps and compasses, I always have done and I always will, I even have quite a big compass tattooed on the top of my back between my shoulder blades!
D’you know what, a lightsaber would be awesome, but for some reason I don’t classify them as magical? Idk, I can’t explain haha!

That’s something I didn’t know about you! I wanna see a pic! Haha
That’s understandable. I mean you think laser sword and the brain automatically thinks technology even if it isn’t.

It’s one of a few I have overall, it’s definitely the biggest.
Yeah exactly, my brain think science and technology not magic.
Now if this was a film memorabilia list of be having me a lightsaber for sure.
