Top Ten Tuesday: Romance Freebie | Favourite OTP’s

In the spirit of all things Valentine’s day and romance, Jana has thrown us a romance freebie. Sometimes, I really can’t be doing with a freebie week, and find it quite difficult to settle on a topic, but this time, I’ve embraced it whole-heartedly (heart ❀ geddit!). I was thinking of romance books, and just how much I don’t love a novel when the central theme is a romantic pairing, so I abandoned all notions of writing a list of my favourite romance stories, and decided to think about my favourite pairings.

For all of you who don’t know what Top Ten Tuesday is, or don’t know how to get involved, click here. The lovely folks at Broke and Bookish teamed together to create this awesome weekly prompt, which is now hosted by the wonderful Jana @ The Artsy Reader Girl. Quite simply, you list the top ten of the topic prompt.

I think when it comes to stories, whether on TV, in films, or within literature, we all have our favourite relationships. Sometimes their obvious, sometimes they’re non-sensical pipe dreams, but we all have our one-true pairings, and our ships. We all have those couples, and this is all about celebrating my favourites. And because it’s a freebie, they’re not all from books:
1. Rhy Maresh and Alucard Emery (Shades of Magic Trilogy V E Schwab)

Rhy and Alucard are just the best pair of little cuties that I have read about in a while. I’m not entirely sure that Red London would be that OK with a gay couple as King and King (?) Prince (?) (what would the gay consort of the King be called) because of the lack of offspring, but they’re just so awesome and so well written that I just, I can’t even. I love them, I think they are perfect, and I am glad that they are together.
2. Wanda and Ian O’Shea (The Host Stephanie Meyer)

I can remember reading this years after finishing The Twilight Saga and thinking that it seemed like it was written by someone else. I really liked the complexity of the relationships within this, the separate minds and bodies, with different thoughts and different feelings. I really liked the way Stephanie Meyer wrote about Wanda (the alien in Melanie’s head and occupying her thoughts) developing an emotional attachment with Ian, the friend of Melanie’s love Jared.
3. Seth Cohen and Summer Roberts (The O.C.)

I think every single person who watched this show as it aired, and everyone since, shipped Seth and Summer. They epitomised opposites attract and provided a really funny and genuine romantic pairing. It probably helped that they were dating in real life too, but they were so perfect.
4. Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff (Marvel Cinematic Universe)

OK, I admit it, this is a two-fold deal.

1. In Winter Soldier, I ship Rogers and Romanoff hard. He is so awkward and stuck in another time, and she is all spunky and no holds barred, and I was all about their flirty but weird vibe that they had going on throughout their gallivanting.

2. In Winter Solider and beyond they also have this really cool friend thing going on where she is trying to help him adjust to the modern world, and dating, and he is just so unsure.
5. Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin (Harry Potter J K Rowling)

I am a big fan of Remus Lupin, like many people, so of course I wanted him to be happy. I also love Tonks and think that she is one of the most underrated characters in the whole series. I just like the fact that they are so unlikely as a thing, but that they’re so genuine and just want the best for each other and finally realise that the best thing is each other.
6. Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D)

I mean, I think the characters in the show ship these too considering that they are known as FitzSimmons from the out set. It’s not just a romantic relationship, the genuine level of love, understanding, and companionship that they provide for each other. They embrace each others quirks and are just the cutest little squishes.
7. Phoebe Buffet and Mike Hannigan (Friends)

Phoebe and Mike, Consuela Banana-Hammock and Crap Bag, they really are just the perfect pair of complete weirdos. They really show you that being with someone is finding someone who loves your weird.
8. Nikki Alexander and Harry Cunningham (Silent Witness)

This really was the ship that was so close but never sailed. I was so mad at the writers for not going there for so long, and now I am mad at Tom Ward for leaving before it happened. They were adorable and nerdy together and worked so well, well enough that Emma and I could construct the perfect scenes for them.
9. Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry (His Dark Materials Phillip Pullman)

I think the end of these books is genuinely one of the most heart breaking endings ever. They could have been so happy but no, fate and the survival of everything ever meant that they were cruelly parted before their time.
10. Harvey Spector and Donna Paulsen (Suits)

I think we all want this to happen. I think they want this to happen. I think their real life friendship just means that seeing them on the screen together is literally everything. They’re just so perfect and in-sync and ship-able.
Bonus – Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir

As it’s Winter Olympics season, it wouldn’t be right to ignore the Ice Dancing pair that is Virtue and Moir. They’ve danced on the ice for over 20 years as a duo, and are like shadows of each other. In fact, they’re like a single entity. And they’re adorable, and they’ve always been subject to the ‘will they/won’t they’ and ‘have they/haven’t they’ line of questioning. I ship it!

Who are your OTPs? Who do you ship in books, TV, and film?

  2. I love Phoebe and Mike and their adorable weirdness – such a shame they were only in the last couple of seasons.
I thought The Host was so different to the Twilight books too. Crazy they have the same author!

    1. They’re just the best. I wish Mike had been around for so much longer. Sigh, maybe I don’t because I couldn’t deal with their cuteness.
The Host couldn’t be more different from Twilight, definitely evidence we shouldn’t judge an author by specific book only.
