It’s December. It’s almost Christmas. It’s absolutely freezing outside. I’ve gone into full blown Christmas preparation mode now, because I love Christmas! But Christmas is already bringing temptation after temptation, and i’ m already worrying about how I’ll cope with dieting during the festive period, or, how I’ll get back on the horse if I decide to stop for a couple of weeks. Decisions, decisions.
Fat Friday is a weekly blog post tracking my weight loss and fitness journey, used to keep myself accountable, keep a record of my progress, and share hints & tips that have helped me. To track my progress, or read my previous entries, click here.

I am officially not ill anymore. Which is great, yes, because I’m not ill, but it means that my excuses to avoid going to the gym and do exercise. Emma and I completed a session of zumba last week after dragging ourselves to the gym on a Sunday morning. I know. I was in work from 2pm-10pm as well. I was quite proud of myself. I think that little bit of exercise made it that bit easier to decide to take on a bigger fitness challenge: couch to 5K.
Yes, I picked the first ridiculously cold week of the winter to start running outside. Yes, I went after an early shift, which itself came on the back of a later finish, so in hindsight, I could have picked a more awake time to start, and y’know, one that didn’t have hail stones and temperatures in the minus figures. Instead, I put my running gear on, and headed down to Otterspool (a promenade near where I live that runs along the River Mersey). It’s well lit, flat, well tarmacked, and is an ideal place to begin running. It is also on a body of water so the wind is fierce and the water whips off the river, but I didn’t find that out until mid session. The podcasts for couch to 5K are completely free to download and easy to follow. The lady who instructs is well paced and isn’t annoying, and the music changes pace to fit with the walking and the running sections. I’ve so far done 2 sessions, and would recommend it thoroughly.
Emma and I also went to the gym this week. While there, Emma worked out while I did the second couch to 5K session. I quickly realised how much easier it is to run outside than on the treadmill. It was difficult to control the change in pace, and the running itself was much harder work. I guess you learn these things quickly, eh? It was at least warm.
In other news, I have been trying to eat less and eat much healthier. Again. I have let things slip over the last few weeks, so I was determined to eat less food in all, but make sure the food I was eating was healthier. That was a great plan and I put it into action over the weekend, but then Emma and I had a mega day of Christmas shopping on our day off on Tuesday, and went for Breakfast and Afternoon Tea. Oops. We walked and walked, and shopped and shopped, so I think we sort of deserved it.
I also went out to the Manchester Christmas markets on a works night out on Wednesday too. I don’t think I have ever been to the Manchester markets before, but the ones I visited in Birmingham were good, so I was excited. And it was a really great night out. It was nice to get to know some of the guys I haven’t spent as much time with, and it was really great to have a dedicated time with just our team mates. We wandered around the markets, we had some drinks, we sang karaoke badly, and I got to try the famous ‘Yorky Pud Burrito’. It was nice, it was good, but I do think it has been slightly over hyped.
I am getting a little worried about my ongoing progress for December. I have a chocolate advent calendar, I have Christmas meals at work, I have the whole of the Christmas period itself at home, and I need to battle through this without putting any weight back on, in fact, with losing weight throughout. I really want to lose more weight, but I am worried about stagnating over the coming weeks, and even worse, about stopping all together. I’ve upped my exercise this week, and think I probably just need to be stricter with food until my work Christmas meal, but it’s easier said than done at this time of year.
WEIGHT: This week: –1lb Total: -18lb
EXERCISE: 3x fitness sessions: 1x Zumba, 2x Couch to 5K week 1 runs
MOOD: Cold and tired
RECIPE/FOOD/SNACK of the week: Mulled Apple
HINTS/TIPS of the week: Couch to 5K is free and easy (ish)
Considering how much effort I have put in this week, I am a little disappointed that my weight loss hasn’t been more. I would really love to just shift a load of weight, but it’s getting harder and moving slower, and I still don’t feel or see the difference. Sigh, onwards and upwards towards Christmas.
